Diego Brasioli

about

I was born in Rome in 1961. After graduating from the Dante Alighieri High School, I enrolled in the Faculty of Political Science at La Sapienza University of Rome with the idea of undertaking a course of study that would help me enter the world of journalism. In fact, already during my university years, I attended specialized courses on mass media and started writing for magazines and newspapers such as Affari Esteri, Affari Sociali Internazionali, and Avvenire. I collaborated with Vatican Radio and with RAI, Radio Televisione Italiana, in particular as programmer-director for the RAI 1 channel.

Life, however, often has unexpected turns in store for us, and immediately after graduating in 1985, I decided to start preparing for the diplomatic career, attending both the SIOI (Italian Society for International Organization) courses and those of the Collège d'Europe in Bruges, Belgium; in 1986, I crowned this aspiration, winning the entrance competition at the Farnesina and thus joining the Italian Foreign Service.

From 1988 to 1991, my first assignment abroad was as a commercial secretary at the Italian Embassy in Islamabad (Pakistan). Immediately afterwards, I served in Amman (Jordan), where I remained until 1995. During my subsequent period at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Directorate General for Political Affairs), I had the privilege of being selected to participate in the US State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program, a prestigious exchange program for officials between Italy and the United States.

From 1999 to 2003, I worked as a political counselor and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Italian Embassy in Beirut (Lebanon), and from 2003 to 2007 as Consul General in Los Angeles (USA).

Returning to Rome in 2007, I was called to head the Office of the Directorate General for Political Affairs dealing with the fight against transnational organized crime and international terrorism, as well as following the G8 political agenda and preparing for the G8 Summit in L'Aquila (2009); subsequently, in 2010, I was appointed Chair of the Interministerial Committee for Human Rights (CIDU).

From 2013 to 2017, I served as Italian Ambassador to Romania.

After returning to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in 2017, I held the positions of Deputy Director General for Political Affairs and Central Director for Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Countries. In June 2018, I assumed the role of Central Director for Security Matters and Deputy to the Director General for Political Affairs. From 2020 to 2024, I served as an Ambassador in Luxembourg.

Since July 2024, again back in Rome, I have been working at the General Secretariat of the Farnesina, which, after so many years, I tend to consider a bit like my second home.

In December 2024, I was appointed Special Envoy for Cybersecurity of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for International Cooperation and Head of the Technological Innovation and Cyber Security Unit of the Foreign Ministry. It is an honor and a great responsibility, especially at a time when cyber and AI, together with growing hybrid threats, are profoundly transforming international politics and have far-reaching repercussions on national security.

In parallel to my diplomatic career, I have continued to cultivate my passion for study, academic research, and creative writing, publishing fiction, non-fiction, and articles in specialized journals. I collaborate with the University of Luxembourg, as part of the Master of European Governance, with courses on the subject of Diplomacy in the Contemporary World, and with the LUMSA University of Rome on the Master's degree course in International Relations—International relations in the Digital Era, as well as with other universities. I am a member of the Italian Society of Political Science (SISP), and I am among the authors of the Rivista di Studi Politici Internazionali (RSPI). Since 2023, I have been Director Emeritus of the Diplomacy Lab at the University of Luxembourg.

My passions, which I share with my family, include music, good reading, and our beloved dogs.
